Is it legal to work for pizza and credit ? What are the responsibilities of producers? Do I need teachers for minor children if we shoot on weekends? Do I need an animal wrangler if I cast a cat? What are the pros and cons of an actor joining a union. Does working union push the budget and schedule into the stratosphere? Can going union cost less in the long run? Production Assistants are just unpaid interns, right? These are just some of the types of questions that we will help answer.
We often start in the business as student or amateur filmmakers working with just friends and family. Our first projects are often shot guerrilla style without permits and not event a thought about rules regarding talent. But what about when we take production up a level? Actors want fair compensation. Producers want to keep costs low and avoid liability exposure. Use of children and animals get special protections with consequences if ignored. Unions try to codify labor rates and supply a pool of qualified talent. If you don't know the rules, you may get tripped up or leave something on the plate.
The Comedy Palace serves food and drink. Please plan for dinner. A two item minimum helps cover the cost of the venue. Thanks!!
